Material specification
PE vs PLA vs Water-Based Coating: A Paper Cup Buyer Guide
EcoWing has production experience with PE, PLA and water-based barriers. Selection depends on the cup, target market, required evidence and final confirmed specification.
| Barrier | Typical reference | Buyer considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Single PE | Approx. 18 gsm | Confirm product application, layer configuration and market requirements. |
| Double PE | Approx. 32 gsm | Confirm whether the order requires barrier layers on both sides. |
| PLA | Approx. 30 gsm | Confirm material evidence, use conditions and local disposal system. |
| Water-based | Approx. 10 gsm | Confirm cup format, barrier target, compliance evidence and market rules. |
Paperboard GSM is not coating GSM. These approximate coating references depend on the final confirmed specification and must never be treated as the paperboard weight.
How to choose
Start with beverage/application, wall structure, market requirements and evidence needs. Then confirm barrier type, coating weight and testing with the order specification. No option is automatically recyclable, compostable or biodegradable in every market.
